Achebe’s wisdom in the AI era

Chinua Achebe’s proverb about adaptation—“Eneke the bird says that since men have learned to shoot without missing, he has learned to fly without perching”—has become relevant in classrooms dealing with artificial intelligence.
At the recent Cambridge Schools Conference, educators addressed the issue directly. Students now live in a world where AI can generate essays, summarize texts, and translate languages instantly. Schools must help them use these tools without losing the ability to learn independently.
Performance vs. understanding: the growing disconnect
Generative AI produces polished work, but research shows that over-reliance on it may weaken memory and reduce brain activity. Professor Rose Luckin, CEO of Educate Research Ventures, presented findings that students who use AI for essay writing show less cognitive engagement. The effects last even after they stop using the tools.
“The risk is not AI itself,” Luckin said. “The risk is unmanaged AI.” The concern goes beyond plagiarism. If students let machines do their thinking, they may never develop the ability to build knowledge on their own.

Banning AI isn’t the solution. Educators are being encouraged to rethink learning by valuing the process as much as the final product. The conference emphasized the need to celebrate the “messiness of learning.”
Human skills AI can’t replicate
Luckin explained that schools have long undervalued human abilities while overestimating AI’s. The most important skills—metacognition, self-awareness of learning, and confidence in one’s abilities—remain uniquely human.
A study by Cambridge’s Sarah Hughes and Silvia Pirola supported this view. Teachers and students agree that metacognition is essential for success, yet it remains the hardest skill to teach. Andrew Field led a breakout session on future skills, focusing on how students must first understand their own learning before they can use AI effectively.
Education has faced technological changes before. Calculators, word processors, and the internet all forced schools to adapt. AI differs in speed and scale—and the stakes are higher. As Luckin noted, the real danger isn’t AI use itself, but using it without understanding its limits.

Adaptation as survival
The conference ended on a hopeful note. The purpose of education remains to create meaningful learning experiences. What has changed is the urgency. If Eneke the bird adapted to survive, today’s students must do the same—not by avoiding AI, but by learning to use it without losing their own critical abilities.
This may require redesigning lessons to emphasize process over results. Assignments could demand explanations of reasoning rather than just correct answers. Learning might become messier and slower, but the alternative—a generation producing flawless work without real comprehension—is far riskier.
